German Chardonnay has come a long way, and Julien Renard is one of the growers showing just how far. He belongs to a small "new Mosel" crowd alongside Jakob Tennstedt, Philip Lardot and Rosalie Curtin, and his wines tend to recall Chablis and the Savoie as much as the Mosel. The 2024 is a comeback story. Frost took almost his entire crop that year, so he bought grapes from other growers to get through the vintage. For Chardonnay and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) it was a lovely year in Germany, and those wines came out precise, lively, firm and long. Renard's own route into wine is just as unlikely. He has a French father and a German mother, grew up north of Cologne with no wine in the family, and his first love was the theatre. Three weeks working for a winemaker changed that: he found it devastatingly hard and loved it. He now works out of Winningen in the Terrassen-Mosel, the lower stretch of the river known for its cliff-like terraced vineyards. His wines are dense, compact and many-layered, so this is a good bottle for anyone who wants a thoughtful white off the beaten path.

More about Julien Renard

Julien Renard is one of the 'new Mosel' growers reimagining what wine from the river's vertiginous terraces can be: picked early, aged long on fine lees, and closer in spirit to Chablis or Savoie than to the Mosel of tradition.

Born to a French father and a German mother and raised north of Cologne, Renard first set out for a life in theater. He came to wine through hard physical work, cold-calling estates until Heymann-Löwenstein in Winningen took him on, and he never left the Lower Mosel. Today he farms roughly one hectare of terraces around Winningen, including parcels in the Hamm and Röttgen vineyards, slopes steep even by Mosel standards. Everything is done by hand, organically and without tilling.

In the cellar he treads the grapes by foot, uses a basket press, ferments each parcel separately in used wood, and rests the wines for around two years on their lees, adding little or no sulfur at bottling. Riesling is the focus, alongside Weissburgunder, Chardonnay and Müller-Thurgau. Expect dense, stony, salty whites with real grip, made in tiny quantities.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters or a plate of steamed mussels; trout with brown butter and almonds; roast chicken with tarragon; gougères or a wedge of aged Comté; a Savoyard fondue or tartiflette.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, cool-climate Chardonnay in a Chablis-like mould: green apple, lemon and white flowers over a stony, slate-edged minerality. It's typically dense and compact but still lively on the palate, with firm, bright acidity keeping everything precise. The finish should be dry, long and layered.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
