A solera Madeira with 1890 on the label, from a house that has been bottling wine on the island since 1870. Malmsey is the anglicised form of Malvasia, and it gives the darkest, richest and fullest-bodied of all Madeiras: smooth, sultana-scented, sweet, but with the streak of acidity that keeps Madeira from ever turning cloying. Justino's was founded by Justino Henrique Freitas as a private family firm under the name that still appears on this label, and it holds one of the largest stocks of Madeira wine on the island, including high-quality wines aged in oak casks — which is how bottles like this one survive at all. The label on this bottle is scratched; the wine inside is not the sort of thing that comes back around. The house pours sweet Madeira at 16-18°C (61-64°F), a touch below room temperature.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Sticky toffee pudding, pecan pie, or a wedge of aged Gouda or Comté. Also very good on its own after dinner with roasted almonds and dried figs, or alongside dark chocolate and coffee.

Tasting Profile

Sweet and full-bodied, deep brown in the glass. Aromas of sultana and raisin, caramel, toasted nuts and orange peel. The texture is smooth and viscous, but a firm line of acidity cuts straight through the sugar so it never feels heavy or cloying. Long, warm, nutty finish.
