Kirchspiel is pure finesse and dancing minerality in Klaus Peter Keller's words, and few sites in Germany push dry Riesling this hard. The Kellers (Klaus Peter and son Felix) are Rheinhessen's most coveted producers, working from Florsheim-Dalsheim with a near-mystical reading of Westhofen's limestone hillsides. Kirchspiel sits on hard limestone laced with quartz veins, with old vines and pockets of red sandstone that give the wine its trademark lift and tension. The 2016 is a classical, cool-year GG, fermented with native yeasts and raised in the Keller family's traditional large old oak fuders. Nine years on, it has settled into a singing window where stone, citrus oil, and herbal smoke fold over a long saline finish. One of Germany's great dry Rieslings, drinking gorgeously now.

"The nose here is surprisingly subdued, offering intimations of citrus and crushed stone. But the wine delivers a veritable mouthful of chalk along with juicy, oregano-laced lime, grapefruit and white peach. Firm in feel but not austerely hard, it finishes with a vivid sense of energy and a piquant peach kernel glow that never turns into outright bitterness or precludes a striking sense of transparency to stony and alkaline nuances." —David Schildknecht

"Partly pressed in a basket press (60%), the 2016 Kirchspiel Riesling GG opens with a clear, fresh, chalky and intensely fruity nose. This is a rich, juicy, concentrated and fresh dry Riesling from calcareous soils that reveals a lot of tension, salt and vitality. Fine tannins here. Great concentration, juiciness and lingering salinity, with great grip and tension. An impressive wine!" —Stephan Reinhardt

"Among Keller`s Grosse Gewächse, the Kirchspiel is often regarded as Cinderella before she went to the ball, less hyped than her sisters, but her beauty obvious to the observant. Her gentle perfume of elderflower and fine citrus aromas certainly invites you to make her acquaintance. On the palate, gooseberry and grapefruit cause a certain tingle, further stimulation of the taste buds being provided by a sprinkling of fresh green herbs and a cool, salty tang. Truly invigorating style of Grosses Gewächs."

More about Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beautiful with seared scallops in brown butter, halibut over white asparagus, pork schnitzel with lemon and herbs, or roast chicken with riesling-cream sauce. Also lovely with delicate sushi, ceviche, and aged hard cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry and razor-precise, with white peach, lime pith, smoky herbs, and chalk-quartz minerality. Native-yeast ferment in steel gives a transparent, electric texture. Long saline finish; cool 2016 nervy energy with serious GG concentration.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
