Abts Erde is the cult sub-parcel inside Westhofen's Brunnenhauschen grand cru, and Klaus Peter Keller's bottling of it is one of the great dry Rieslings on earth. The site was the favored vineyard of the Bishop of Worms in the 14th century, planted on a few hectares of limestone laced with clay and iron oxide that gives the wine its trademark spice. The vines sit roughly 200 meters from old-vine Morstein, and the parcel is so revered that for regulatory reasons the wine is sometimes labeled simply Abts E. The 2017 is concentrated and detailed in classic Keller fashion, native-yeast fermented and built for the long haul. Eight years on, it is opening into a window where ferrous spice, white stone fruit, and saline grip all sing.

More about Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Built for richer plates: roast Bresse chicken, sea bass with fennel and saffron, veal in cream-mushroom sauce, or seared duck breast with stone fruit. Also superb with vintage Comté, Gruyère, and aged hard cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry, ferrous, intensely mineral. White peach and Mirabelle plum fold into wet-stone spice, blood orange peel, and ginger lift. Iron-oxide soils give a savory, almost smoky depth. Concentrated 2017 with a long, saline, GG-grade finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
