Antonio Galloni

91 points

"Felix Keller took charge of the grapes for this very limited offering, raising them in a small, older barrel, from which he bottled it directly, without filtration. He did not attempt to run the gauntlet of the tasting panels that are authorized to approve Qualitätswein status, instead happily settling for an official classification as Landwein. The nose is relatively restrained for a wine from this grape, but no less lovely for that; if anything, it's the contrary. Basil, sage, elder flower and caraway aromas rise from the glass. The inner-mouth impression is plush, almost thick, yet at the same time, the wine’s mere 11.5% alcohol translates into a delightful sense of buoyancy. Flavor-wise this is anything but opaque. The lingering finish is soothing and cooling. I could drink a lot of this (if only)! It would be fascinating to follow, and as for its age-ability, I confess to pretty much sheer speculation." —David Schildknecht

More about Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
