Chardonnay grown on limestone and aged in French oak barriques is straight out of the Burgundian playbook. Here it comes from one of Rheinhessen's most limestone-obsessed families. Tobias, Corina and Björn Knewitz farm around Appenheim in northern Rheinhessen, a region known as "the land of a thousand hills," where the high-limestone soil is the remains of an ancient reef and fossils of its creatures still turn up. This bottling draws on two of their sites. Gau-Algesheimer Goldberg is very high in limestone, and the family counts it as their warmest vineyard. At Nieder-Hilbersheimer Honigberg, clay, red limestone and iron-rich soils give the wines depth and power. The grapes are farmed organically and fermented with native yeasts, and the wine ages in a mix of old and new Tronçais oak barriques. If you love Chardonnay that tastes of where it was grown but Côte d'Or prices have pushed you out, this is a bottle worth knowing about. It's serious, site-driven Chardonnay from a region most people still associate with Riesling.

More about Knewitz

Appenheim isn't a name most Riesling drinkers know, and the Knewitz brothers have set out to change that. Tobias and Björn Knewitz make taut, limestone-driven dry Riesling in a quiet corner of northern Rheinhessen. In about fifteen years they turned the family farm into a member of the VDP, the association of Germany's top estates.

The family has made wine in Appenheim since the 19th century. Erwin and Magdalena Knewitz built the estate, and their son Gerold began bottling its wine in 1976. His son Tobias trained at Geisenheim and took over in 2007. Tobias's wife, Corina, and his brother Björn joined him soon after. The estate has grown to about 25 hectares around Appenheim, Gau-Algesheim and Nieder-Hilbersheim, at the foot of the Westerberg, a former coral reef. Limestone runs through every site, and Hundertgulden is reckoned among the most limestone-rich vineyards in Germany. The vines are farmed organically.

Riesling is the heart of it, aged in traditional wooden casks. It runs from the estate Riesling through village wines to Grosses Gewächs from Hundertgulden, Honigberg and Steinacker. Silvaner, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir fill out the range. The house style is cool and pure, with a salty streak, fine acidity and a spicy edge.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon cream sauce; pan-seared scallops with brown butter; trout amandine; veal schnitzel with lemon and a warm potato salad; aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect a Burgundian-leaning Chardonnay: ripe yellow apple, pear and citrus, with gentle toast and hazelnut notes from the French oak barriques and a chalky, stony edge from the limestone. It's typically medium-bodied, with lively acidity and a creamy texture, and finishes dry and long. Think white Burgundy rather than a buttery New World Chardonnay.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
