If the Nahe has a sun trap, this is it: Dautenpflanzer is an amphitheater-shaped bowl that ranks among the warmest sites on the river and rarely sees frost. Kruger-Rumpf, the Munster-Sarmsheim estate, farms a tiny parcel here where loess topsoil sits over quartzite and weathered shale. That warm, generous ground gives this grand cru a rounder, riper frame than the estate's slate sites. Grosses Gewachs means fully dry and grand-cru serious, fermented with wild yeasts; the estate is converting to organic certification ("in Umstellung"). This is the sunny, expansive side of Kruger-Rumpf's top tier.

Robert Parker

"The nose of the 2024 Dautenpflänzer GG Münster Riesling is characterized by fine reduction and dense, elegant, juicy fruit. On the palate, it is racy but dense and fruity, even slightly sweet in taste but sharp in acidity and therefore still unbalanced. This is probably not a good time or occasion for this Riesling... Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden, August 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Kruger-Rumpf

Georg Rumpf inherited a vineyard tradition and turned it into something radical: organic viticulture in Germany's Nahe region. The family's 70 hectares produce Rieslings and whites with real character and freshness, made by someone who studied at Geisenheim and actually believes in what he's doing. No theater, just honest wine.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
