Im Pitterberg is Kruger-Rumpf's crown jewel, a 2.5-hectare monopole the family farms entirely on their own. The slope runs steep, up to 60 percent, over blue-grey Devonian slate, with some vines pushing 70 years old and planted almost shoulder to shoulder. All that stone and struggle shows up in the glass as a taut, salty, mineral intensity that sets this apart from the estate's warmer crus. Grosses Gewachs means bone-dry and grand-cru ambitious, fermented naturally from organic fruit. If you want to taste what Nahe slate can really do, start here.

Robert Parker

89 points

"Dense, almost tropical aromas of ripe yellow fruits characterize the nose of the 2024 Im Pitterberg GG Münster Riesling, accompanied by subtle slate notes. Taut and racy on the palate, with concentrated but restrained fruit and an astringent citrus finish, this is another Riesling that still needs time to show the potential of its 75-year-old vines." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Kruger-Rumpf

Georg Rumpf inherited a vineyard tradition and turned it into something radical: organic viticulture in Germany's Nahe region. The family's 70 hectares produce Rieslings and whites with real character and freshness, made by someone who studied at Geisenheim and actually believes in what he's doing. No theater, just honest wine.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
