Scheurebe is Riesling's more exotic offspring, and almost nobody grows it with this much care. Kruger-Rumpf farms theirs in a grand cru vineyard and makes it as a Kabinett, which is about as friendly an introduction to the grape as you'll find. Georg Scheu created the variety in 1916 by crossing Riesling with Bukettrebe (for decades everyone assumed the other parent was Silvaner, until 2012). The Rumpf family calls it an exotic grape that has been close to their hearts for generations, and it was their grandmother's favourite wine. Their Scheurebe vines were planted in the 1950s and 1960s and grow in Dautenpflänzer, a steep, south-facing amphitheater that we think is the warmest spot on the Nahe. The name roughly means "shoot planter," because the slope was once a nursery. The family's usual approach to this cuvée is hand-picking and fermentation with natural yeasts in a small stainless steel tank. Pour it for anyone who thinks they've already tasted everything Germany has to offer.

More about Kruger-Rumpf

Georg Rumpf inherited a vineyard tradition and turned it into something radical: organic viticulture in Germany's Nahe region. The family's 70 hectares produce Rieslings and whites with real character and freshness, made by someone who studied at Geisenheim and actually believes in what he's doing. No theater, just honest wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green papaya salad, Sichuan dan dan noodles, Vietnamese caramelized pork, pork belly bao, or a wedge of washed-rind cheese like Époisses.

Tasting Profile

Expect Scheurebe's exotic side: pink grapefruit, passion fruit and a hint of blackcurrant leaf. Think of a Riesling with a dash of Sauvignon Blanc's aromatics. Kabinett Scheurebe is typically light-bodied and gently off-dry, with crisp, juicy acidity to balance the sweetness and steel-fermented freshness that keeps the finish clean and lively.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
