New Zealand's benchmark Chardonnay house makes Pinot Noir too, and the Village bottling is the easy, low-commitment way to find out what it can do. The Brajkovich family has run Kumeu River since 1944 (Michael Brajkovich was New Zealand's first Master of Wine). They describe their Village range as carefully made wine at a modest price: hand-harvested, sustainably grown grapes, fermented only with wild yeast and given extended time on the lees. The Pinot blends fruit from two cool places. One is the family's home turf in Kumeu, near Auckland, where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific keep summers below 30°C. The other is Rays Road in Hawke's Bay, a dry-farmed, north-facing limestone hillside at 180 metres, which is unusually high for the region. The family bought that vineyard outright in 2017 from a joint venture that included Sancerre's Pascal Jolivet. Their practice is to save the best Rays Road fruit for the single-vineyard bottling and blend the rest into this one. As for 2022, the family calls it the last of four superb harvests in a row. Summer topped out at just 28°C, the weather stayed dry, and picking wrapped up on 13 March, just before heavy rain arrived.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared duck breast with a cherry or plum sauce; cedar-plank salmon; mushroom and thyme risotto; roast chicken with herbs and lemon; pork tenderloin with roasted beets.

Tasting Profile

Expect a fresh, cool-climate Pinot Noir: red cherry and raspberry with a subtle savoury, earthy edge, a light-to-medium body and bright acidity. Tannins are typically fine and gentle, and the extended time on the lees tends to add a silky texture before a dry, clean finish. Think a juicy, approachable Bourgogne Rouge.
