A one-time back-vintage release of a wine that, once it's gone, won't be made or offered again. La Visciola is the tiny biodynamic estate that Piero Macciocca and his wife Rosa Alessandri built in 2005 to rescue Cesanese, the near-forgotten native red of Lazio, just south of Rome. The Mozzatta bottling comes from a single parcel of 75-plus-year-old vines rooted in rare white clay, which gives it the deepest concentration and most haunting aromatics of the estate's crus. With age it starts to resemble mature red Burgundy from Vosne or Nuits-Saint-Georges more than anything you'd expect from central Italy. Fermented and raised in concrete and neutral wood, unfined and unfiltered, with just 1,500 bottles made. This 2020 is drinking beautifully now and has years of life ahead.
