Two Chavot parcels, put in one bottle. Les Empreintes is Laherte's case for what their home village tastes like. It is an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay grows in Les Chemins d'Epernay, a west-facing parcel planted in 1957, and the house includes a third Chardonnay Muscaté, a muscat-scented selection of the grape. The Pinot Noir comes from Les Rouges Maisons, a north-facing parcel planted in 1983 on deep clay laced with flint and schist over chalk. Both are farmed organically with biodynamic methods, fermented with native yeasts in 228-litre barrels with regular lees stirring, and kept off malolactic. The 2019 then rested 60 months in bottle before it was disgorged in October 2024 and got just 2 g/L of dosage. That means five years of patience and almost no sugar to hide behind, which is exactly why you'd pick it: this is grower Champagne that tastes of a place, not a house style.

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2019 Extra-Brut Les Empreintes, disgorged in December 2024 with two grams per liter dosage, is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir from the north-facing Les Rouges Maisons and Chardonnay from the west-facing Les Chemins d’Épernay, incorporating up to 25% muscaté Chardonnay. It reveals scents of pear, lemon zest and peach, mingling with dried flowers. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, ample and textural, with a rich yet vibrant core of fruit upheld by a spine of incisive acidity. It finishes long and citrus-inflected, retaining a bright, tension-filled profile due to its vinification without malolactic fermentation." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Laherte Freres

A grower Champagne house in Chavot, founded in 1889 and now run by Aurélien Laherte, who took over in 2005. The family works about 10.5 hectares split into more than 75 parcels, some farmed biodynamically and the rest organically or sustainably. Much of the wine is fermented in barrels and foudres, and single-vineyard cuvées are vinified separately in used Burgundy barrels. These wines speak for themselves: no flash, real terroir.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, very dry grower Champagne: lemon, green apple and a floral, faintly grapey lift from the Chardonnay Muscaté, layered with brioche and toasted nuts from barrel fermentation and long ageing on the lees. With malolactic blocked, the acidity stays bright and chalky, the mousse fine, and the finish long, saline and flinty.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
