One site, one grape, one year: this is Laherte Frères' Chardonnay at its most transparent. Les Grandes Crayères comes from the family's old Chardonnay vines halfway up the slope in Chavot, their home village in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, facing west over soft Campanian chalk. With a name like that, it's no surprise the chalk is the whole point. It's finished Extra Brut, so very little sugar stands between you and the site. The house sums up the style as "delicate & structured," which is about as good a two-word description of serious blanc de blancs as you'll find. Laherte is a family house that farms a little over 11 hectares, so a bottling this specific feels like a page from the grower's own notebook. If you like your Champagne precise rather than plush, start here.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, sashimi and nigiri, sole meunière, gougères, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic chalk-driven blanc de blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with a light touch of brioche and a saline, chalky edge. The Extra Brut finish keeps it bone-dry and taut, with a fine bead, bright acidity and a long, precise, mineral close. Think more Chablis than creamy, plush Champagne.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
