Laherte Freres, Champagne Rose de Saignee Les Beaudiers Extra Brut, 2022

This is rosé Champagne made entirely from Meunier, and made the hard way: the color comes from time on the skins, not a splash of red wine. That's the saignée method. The fruit comes from Les Beaudiers, a mid-slope lieu-dit in the village of Chavot, in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay just south of Épernay. The vines there were planted in 1953, 1958 and 1965, and they face north-east on shallow clay-silt soil studded with schist and flint, over chalk. The family keeps yields low, and the farming is biodynamic. Meunier usually plays a supporting role in Champagne. The Laherte argument is that from old vines it has a complexity and aromatic range all its own. Finished Extra Brut, this 2022 is a rosé for people who want their Champagne to say something, not just look pretty.

More about Laherte Freres

A grower Champagne house in Chavot, founded in 1889 and now run by Aurélien Laherte, who took over in 2005. The family works about 10.5 hectares split into more than 75 parcels, some farmed biodynamically and the rest organically or sustainably. Much of the wine is fermented in barrels and foudres, and single-vineyard cuvées are vinified separately in used Burgundy barrels. These wines speak for themselves: no flash, real terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared duck breast with a cherry sauce; grilled salmon or salmon tartare; tuna crudo; jamón and saucisson; roast chicken with mushrooms; wild mushroom risotto.

Tasting Profile

Expect a deeper-coloured, more vinous rosé Champagne than most: red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, often with the savoury, earthy edge typical of old-vine Meunier. Time on the skins gives it medium body and a light tannic grip, and chalky freshness keeps it taut through a bone-dry, saline finish. Think of it as a rosé for the dinner table rather than a pale aperitif.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
