This is Barbera grown in the Bussia cru of Monforte d'Alba, deep in Barolo country, and it gets the same attention as the Nebbiolo next door. Lalú's parcel is 1.5 hectares in the southern part of Bussia, on Sant'Agata Fossil marl, farmed organically with grass left growing between the rows. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala are friends and schoolmates. In 2019 they set up their winery in a small former workshop in Serralunga d'Alba. The Barbera is never an afterthought here. Fermentations use native yeasts. It's a low-key way into one of Monforte's great hillsides, made by two of the Langhe's most interesting newcomers.

More about Lalu

A tiny project from Piedmont: five hectares of organically farmed Nebbiolo and Barbera in Monforte and La Morra. Lalu makes remarkably approachable, delicious wines—bright and clean, the opposite of blockbuster Barolo. Young producer, already impressive.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

Sourced from vineyards in La Morra and Monforte d'Alba from vines too young to use for Barolo.
Orientation
Varying expositions at 300-400 meters.
Soil
Varying but mostly Sant'Agata Fossil Marl - a limestone-clay typical of the area.
Viticulture
Practicing organic. Hand-harvested.
Vinification
1/3 of the fruit is done whole berry, 1/3 whole cluster and 1/3 destemmed. Vinified in concrete tanks.
Aging
Aged in large Austrian oak barrels and then some time in second passage barriques for a total of about eight months.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with sausage ragù, agnolotti del plin in brown butter, pizza with salami and mushrooms, grilled pork chops, or a weeknight bowl of pasta with tomato and pancetta.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barbera d'Alba profile: ripe dark cherry, plum and blackberry with a hint of violet and earthy spice. It's typically medium-bodied, with Barbera's trademark bright, mouthwatering acidity and soft, gentle tannins, finishing dry, juicy and fresh. Think of it as the more fruit-forward, easygoing counterpart to the Nebbiolo grown alongside it.
