This is Monforte d'Alba Barolo in magnum from two of the most interesting newcomers in the Langhe, and the big bottle is made for a full table. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala met studying at the University of Pollenzo, where they wrote their thesis on designing a carbon-neutral winery. The name Lalú is just the first syllables of their names put together (La + Lu). They learned the trade working harvests at Trediberri, Reva and Conterno-Fantino, then did stages in Burgundy at Domaine Lafon and with Cécile Tremblay. In 2019 they set up their winery in a small former workshop in Serralunga d'Alba, and they farm naturally and regeneratively, with soil health as the priority. The label names the commune rather than a cru, which makes it the village-level partner to their single-cru Barolo from Le Coste di Monforte. Their Barolo ferments with native yeasts and ages in Austrian oak, and each year's conditions decide the cellar regime rather than a fixed recipe. This is a young estate worth getting to know early, and a magnum is a generous way to start.

"The Lalù 2022 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba shows immediate intensity and brightness with pretty fruit tones of sweet berry, wild cherry and dried raspberry. It captures the power and focus typical of Monforte, with background notes of lavender, crushed granite and cinnamon stick adding aromatic lift. The wine holds everything in beautiful balance despite the challenges of the vintage, delivering an accessible yet tightly composed expression with dark licorice, fine-grained tannins and a polished, persistent finish. I like this wine a lot. Production totals 3,094 bottles and 100 magnums." —Monica Larner

"Hailing from the winery’s Bricco Giubellini vineyard situated 530m above sea level and bordering Ginestra but not an official MGA, the LaLù 2022 Barolo del Comune di Monforte is a smooth, beautiful red with fresh aromas recalling violet, ripe forest berry, cake spice and wild mint. Reflecting the nose, the elegantly structured, delicious palate features raspberry compote, ripe black cherry, licorice and a dollop of vanilla alongside well-integrated, polished tannins and fresh acidity. A mentholated note caps the finish. Drink through 2037." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with meat ragù, agnolotti del plin, roast veal with mushrooms, or a big wedge of aged Castelmagno at the end of the meal.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Monforte d'Alba Barolo profile: red cherry, dried violets, tar and a savoury, earthy spice, with Austrian oak framing the fruit rather than masking it. Typically full-bodied and structured, with firm, grippy tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long and dry. Think of a more powerful, more tannic cousin of red Burgundy, built to age.
