A magnum of single-cru Barolo from the top of the slope in Monforte d'Alba's Le Coste, made by two of the most exciting young winemakers in the Langhe. It's a bottle for a long table, or for a long rest in the cellar. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala met studying gastronomic sciences at Pollenzo (Lalú is just "La" plus "Lu"). They learned the trade working harvests at Trediberri, Reva and Conterno-Fantino, then did stints in Burgundy at Domaine des Comtes Lafon and with Cécile Tremblay. Their Le Coste vines, mostly planted in 1999, sit high in the cru at about 400 metres. The soil is Sant'Agata Fossil marl, a marine soil that's sandier here than elsewhere. They farm organically, and the Barolo ferments with native yeast and ages in Austrian oak. Their first Le Coste harvest was 2019, so you're getting in early on an estate that's still writing its story. Barolo rewards patience, and a magnum is a good way to give it some.

Robert Parker

95 points

"The Lalù 2022 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is a wine of terrific brightness and energy, offering aromas of wild cherry, raspberry and lavender pastille. The wine is lean and silky in texture with a tight, polished disposition that speaks to elegance rather than power. Despite the challenges of the vintage, it captures impressive purity and precision, with tightly wound fruit that remains focused from start to finish. The finish is slender, silky and refined. Production totals 2,036 bottles and 70 magnums." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef braised in Barolo with polenta; tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; agnolotti del plin in roast-meat sauce; rosemary-roasted leg of lamb; aged Castelmagno or Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Barolo perfume: red cherry, violets and dried herbs, with hints of tar, licorice and a spicy lift from the whole clusters. Large Austrian oak vats frame the fruit rather than flavour it, and firm tannins and bright acidity carry through to a long, savoury, dry finish. Think Burgundian fragrance with far more grip; built to age.
