Lalú makes Langhe Nebbiolo from Barolo-zone crus, and it's the easiest way to get to know two of the most interesting newcomers in the Langhe. Lara Rocchetti and Luisa Sala grew up in Turin, away from wine country. The name Lalú is just the first syllables of their first names put together. They met at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo and wrote a joint thesis on designing a carbon-neutral winery. Then they learned the trade the hard way, working harvests at Trediberri, Reva and Conterno-Fantino, plus stints in Burgundy at Domaine Lafon and with Cécile Tremblay. The person they credit most for what they know about vineyards and the cellar is Dominique Lafon. Their Langhe Nebbiolo is made in small quantities from a half-hectare parcel in La Morra's Roncaglie cru, which was their first vineyard (from 2015), and from Bussia Bovi in Monforte. The Roncaglie vines are still too young for Barolo, so you're drinking fruit from a serious site before it graduates.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Langhe Nebbiolo profile: red cherry, raspberry and violet with hints of tar and dried herbs, the La Morra fruit typically adding perfume and Monforte a firmer frame. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity and fine but noticeable tannins, it finishes dry and savoury. Think of it as Barolo's younger, more approachable sibling.
