When Laurent Ponsot left his family's iconic Domaine Ponsot in 2017, some of the great fruit sources came with him, and the Clos de Vougeot is among the crown jewels. This Grand Cru sits inside the famous walled vineyard of the Cote de Nuits, and Ponsot's Cuvee du Cedre comes from his holdings there, made in a style that's traditional yet always evolving. Ponsot has long been known for a hands-off, late-picking philosophy and wines of clarity and finesse rather than weight. The 2019 vintage gave deeply flavored, structured reds across Burgundy, and a Grand Cru of this stature is built for the long haul. Cellar it, or decant generously for a special occasion.

Burghound

"A very ripe yet still agreeably fresh nose combines notes of black cherry, cassis and plum liqueur with those of warm earth and discreet anise nuances. The delicious and relatively refined larger-scaled flavors possess a caressing mid-palate texture that contrasts somewhat with the muscular, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This is quite firm and is going to required extended patience."

Decanter

94 points

"A blend of six different producers whose vines are scattered throughout the vineyard; some are in a prime location behind the château, but some are from less-favoured sites the bottom of the slope and others elsewhere. The blend of each yields a lovely result, with bright floral notes and a ripe red berry fruit character. On the palate, the wine is deftly balanced, with impressive density and nicely substantial tannins, yet the overall impression is far from strict. Definitely impressive."
