Griotte-Chambertin is one of the rarest of all Burgundy Grand Crus, a tiny 2.56-hectare jewel in Gevrey, and Laurent Ponsot farms a full hectare of it, calling it 'the Lolita of Grands Crus' for its seductive charm. Ponsot left his family's legendary Domaine Ponsot in 2017 to build his own house, bringing prized fruit sources with him, and this Cuvee du Saule is the result here. Griotte takes its name from the morello cherry, and the wine plays the part: expressive red and black fruit, a hint of spice, and a silky palate framed by enough firm tannin to age gracefully for years. This is finesse-driven, traditional Burgundy from one of its most singular figures. Cellar it or decant generously.

"Like the Latricières, the nose is ripe, cool and restrained while featuring elegant aromas of overtly spicy and earthy red cherry liqueur and discreet newly turned earth nuances. There is fine concentration to the intense, palate staining and muscular flavors that also coat the mouth with dry extract while offering a superbly persistent finish that is quite firmly structured. This beautifully balanced and powerful effort is almost lilting and overall, this is quite simply terrific."
