Elisabetta Geppetti's Maremma estate produces this singular 100% Sangiovese from the Poggio Valente vineyard, planted on a foundation of sand with layers of sandstone and clay. Hand-harvested grapes undergo extended maceration for 30–35 days, then age 15 months in 500–600 liter tonneaux (20% new) before a further year in bottle. Brilliant ruby with cherry, pomegranate, and myrtle on the nose, it unfolds compact and elegant on the palate, punctuated by refined tannins and fresh minerality leading to a persistent finish marked by hints of licorice.

"The 2022 Poggio Valente is dense and quite powerful in the glass. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and a kick of sweet oak are all amplified. I would cellar this for at least a year or two. There's plenty of depth here. Perhaps that will help all the elements to meld together a bit more fully. Time in the glass helps a lot, as Sangiovese notes become more pronounced as the wine opens. For now, Poggio Valente shows a lot of vintage 2022 ripeness, but I am cautiously optimistic about its prospects, given how well it develops with aeration." —Antonio Galloni

"Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. More about Fattoria Le Pupille

Few people have done more to put the Maremma on the fine-wine map than Elisabetta Geppetti, often called the "Lady of Morellino." Over four decades she has turned Fattoria Le Pupille, in the hills of coastal southern Tuscany, from a small farm into one of the region's reference estates.

The name comes from two hilltop farmhouses known locally as "le pupille," and the estate began with a few hectares of Morellino di Scansano. Modernization began in the mid-1980s. In 1987 came Saffredi, a Bordeaux-style blend planted with the help of the great consultant Giacomo Tachis, which became the estate's best-known wine. Today the property covers some 420 hectares, with roughly 80 to 90 hectares of vines at an average of about 250 meters. Elisabetta runs it with her children Clara and Ettore. Ettore, an oenologist, has overseen vineyard and cellar since 2019.

In 1996 she bought a hillside near the medieval village of Pereta, named it Poggio Valente, and set out to make a single-vineyard Sangiovese in the Burgundian spirit. The vines face southwest at 280 meters on sandy soils over sandstone, and the wine ages in tonneaux and, increasingly, in larger casks. The range also takes in Morellino di Scansano, a rosé and a white blend. Expect generous Mediterranean fruit with real freshness and a clear sense of place.
