Twenty-two years into its evolution, this 2004 Brunello has settled into a state of refined grace—exactly what the vintage promised. The 2004 harvest delivered balance and purity that time has only deepened, with a wine of perfectly perfumed elegance and refined tannins that seem to dissolve on the palate. Now is the moment to experience how a great Brunello ages without losing vitality.

Antonio Galloni

87 points

"The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino was made during a very early stage in the estate's life when macerations were short and the preference for cooperage leaned more on new oak, which was 70% on this vintage. The 2004 has developed into a powerful, tannic, but also fully mature wine. There is good depth to the black cherry, smoke and mocha flavors, but the wine's best days are in the past. Readers who taste the 2004 today will find a wine made in a style that is starkly different from the approach proprietor Riccardo Campinoti uses today." —Antonio Galloni

More about Le Ragnaie

Riccardo Campinoti farms the highest-altitude vines in Brunello—up to 655 meters—where regulations say you can't go. His Troncone Sangiovese, an IGT for refusing to play by the rules, has cranberry brightness and stony minerality that prove his point perfectly.

Tasting Profile

Gregory Gouges is a very fortunate young man. He has free rein at one of the most historic domains in all of the Cote D'Or. There is a brand new state of the art gravity driven cuverie that his predecessors built after years of careful planning. The family vineyards encompass some of the greatest terroirs in Nuits Saint Georges including the 3.5 hectare Monopole "Clos des Porrets Saint Georges". The parcels are large and the vines are mature and in fantastic health.

The style at Gouges has been updated. For years, heavy extraction resulted in tannic wines that took many years to come around. If you ever come across old bottles, they are fantastic. Under Gregory Gouges, the tannins are managed more carefully and the wines are now made in a style with greater emphasis on finesse and fruit purity, allowing the greatness of Gouges' terroir to really shine.
