The cool vintage of 2008 shaped this wine into something graceful rather than monumental—18 years on and it’s reached perfect drinking equilibrium. Crushed red fruits blend with leather, sweet pipe tobacco, and flowers, while good structure ensures this magnum will continue to evolve. A wine that demonstrates how restraint and finesse age more beautifully than sheer power.

"The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is impeccable. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red cherries and tobacco all take shape in the glass. A wine of superb detail and nuance, the 2008 impresses for its balance and sheer personality. This mid-weight, utterly gracious wine is a terrific effort from high-toned savory notes resonate on the finish." —Antonio Galloni

More about Le Ragnaie

Riccardo Campinoti farms the highest-altitude vines in Brunello—up to 655 meters—where regulations say you can't go. His Troncone Sangiovese, an IGT for refusing to play by the rules, has cranberry brightness and stony minerality that prove his point perfectly.

Tasting Profile

Gregory Gouges is a very fortunate young man. He has free rein at one of the most historic domains in all of the Cote D'Or. There is a brand new state of the art gravity driven cuverie that his predecessors built after years of careful planning. The family vineyards encompass some of the greatest terroirs in Nuits Saint Georges including the 3.5 hectare Monopole "Clos des Porrets Saint Georges". The parcels are large and the vines are mature and in fantastic health.

The style at Gouges has been updated. For years, heavy extraction resulted in tannic wines that took many years to come around. If you ever come across old bottles, they are fantastic. Under Gregory Gouges, the tannins are managed more carefully and the wines are now made in a style with greater emphasis on finesse and fruit purity, allowing the greatness of Gouges' terroir to really shine.
