Two things make this bottle worth the wait: 2010 gave Montalcino one of its great modern vintages, and Le Ragnaie farms the highest vines in the appellation. Riccardo Campinoti bought the estate in 2002 and has spent the years since making the case for altitude, with parcels running up to 600 meters and beyond, where cool nights and slow ripening give Sangiovese lift instead of weight. The cellar work is uncompromisingly traditional: fermentation in concrete with native yeasts, macerations that can run from 25 days to three months, then around three years in large neutral Slavonian botti, bottled unfiltered. It is one of the ironies of winemaking that a grower has to work this hard to make a wine that is transparent. The 2010 season was cool and unhurried with a harvest two weeks later than usual, and the wines came out with both bright acidity and fully ripe tannins; this is drinking beautifully now and will hold comfortably into the 2030s. Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. A super-classic profile of sweet red cherries, smoke, tobacco, cedar and wild herbs lift from the glass in a perfumed, silky Brunello that captures the essence of Sangiovese in this cool, late-ripening vintage. The 2010 is delicious today, but it can also be cellared for another 15-20 years. Le Ragnaie's 2010 will appeal to readers with an appreciation for Red Burgundy or Nebbiolo. The 2010 is a blend of fruit from three sources. About 50% of the fruit came from the Ragnaie property, while the rest of the fruit was sourced from vineyards in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, a combination that yields a wonderfully complete Brunello full of intrigue." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows easy lines with delicate nuances of red berry, bramble, rose petal, dusty earth, crushed mineral, licorice and grilled herb. No one element outweighs the others. The wine presents a delicate patchwork of Sangiovese nuances but does so in the most elegant and understated matter. Feminine in personality, the wine glides smoothly over the palate with gentle, polished tannins. This wine should show well in a few more years." —Monica Larner

"Barely mid ruby with orange tinges. Fine cherry nose with the beginning of undergrowth. Fantastic, elegant and supple palate with fine, muscular tannins. Understated and so long and fine."

Wine Spectator

"Aromas of wild olive, juniper, rosemary and eucalyptus meet plum and licorice flavors. This is tannic, but shows sweet fruit for balance in the end. Slightly more rustic than its peers for now."

More about Le Ragnaie

Riccardo Campinoti farms the highest-altitude vines in Brunello—up to 655 meters—where regulations say you can't go. His Troncone Sangiovese, an IGT for refusing to play by the rules, has cranberry brightness and stony minerality that prove his point perfectly.
