Why is the word Medieval so prominent in this wine's description? At Les-a-Les, a small winery outside of Lisbon, founders Jorge Santos & Rui Lopes have delved deep into Portugal's historical winemaking traditions and discovered this unique recipe. It's most similar to a clarete, or clairet. It's and ancient — well, medieval at least. The 12th-century rulers of England and parts of France, the Plantaganets, were fans — styles of wine that we modern drinkers would recognize as a light red or a dark rosé. This version is actually mostly a white grape (Fernão Pires) blended with a splash of red juice (Castellão) to form a truly unique, and truly delicious wine, with notes of red berry, white flowers and juicy peach.
