The 2022 vintage of Les Serpentieres reflects a warmer year with increased fruit concentration balanced by Duband's restrained hand. Seventy percent whole-cluster fermentation and 13 months in used oak preserve freshness and define a silky palate. This is Savigny at its most refined: the rustic reputation replaced by mineral precision and peppery finesse.

More about Les Terres de Phileandre (David Duband)

David Duband is one of Burgundy's most respected names — a Côte de Nuits producer who spent decades building a reputation for elegant, whole-cluster-driven Pinot Noir across 23 appellations, including grand crus in Clos de la Roche and Charmes-Chambertin. He took over his family's domaine in 1991 at the age of 20, converted all vineyards to organic farming, and drew inspiration from Dujac and DRC to develop a signature style built on aromatic lift, brightness, and transparency. By the time Duband was firmly established, most producers his caliber would have stopped there.

He didn't. In 2018, he set out to explore appellations not represented under his eponymous label, experimenting with new cellar techniques including concrete egg aging and sulfur-free vinification. He named the project Les Terres de Philéandre after his twin daughters, Philomène and Léandre. The project was born specifically with the purchase of grapes from the premier cru Les Serpentières in Savigny-lès-Beaune — a vineyard that became the anchor of the entire lineup.

Fruit is sourced via long-term contracts with growers who share Duband's farming philosophy. All reds are made with his signature whole-cluster fermentation, aged in barrel with minimal new oak, then finished in tank before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The wines are precise, aromatic, and transparently terroir-driven — exactly what you'd expect from a winemaker applying Côte de Nuits discipline to appellations that the market tends to overlook.

Flatiron's Take

Aux Serpentières is where this whole project started — the vineyard that convinced Duband to launch Les Terres de Philéandre in the first place. That origin story shows in the bottle. This is Savigny at its most compelling: perfumed, taut, and silky in the way only whole-cluster Pinot from a master winemaker in a great vintage can be. 2022 delivered the goods across the Côte d'Or, and Duband's version of Serpentières — with 70% whole clusters and no fining or filtration — is the kind of Burgundy that overdelivers at every price point. Drink it now, or hold it. Either way, don't sleep on it.
