A grower blanc de blancs from the Vitryat, the little-known Chardonnay outpost some 60 km east of Épernay where growers are few and Chardonnay is the widely planted variety — which is exactly why Champagne like this stays reasonably priced while Côte des Blancs bottlings climb. The L'Hoste family farms 18 hectares on the Vitryat's limestone hills at Bassuet, slopes prized for their sun exposure and the ripeness and aromatic lift they give Chardonnay. Jean and Suzanne L'Hoste founded the house in 1970, and it grew under their children Pascal and Dominique; Chardonnay has always been the dominant variety here. This Terroir de Chardonnay cuvée is drawn from the estate's best Chardonnay parcels and is the one all-Chardonnay bottling in a range that otherwise leans on Pinot Noir too — the family calls it the signature of their savoir-faire, and it's hard to argue. Fine and elegant on the nose, generous on the palate, with limestone minerality holding the finish together. If you like your Champagne chalky and precise rather than broad and toasty, start here.

More about L'Hoste Pere et Fils

L'Hoste is three generations of committed Champagne making in Bassuet: Jean-Baptiste started in 1970, and now the family runs 15 hectares with a careful hand. They produce Champagne in the traditional way—small volume, natural methods, real terroir. The opposite of sparkly marketing.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The family pours it as an aperitif or with seafood — oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail, salt-baked branzino. Also lovely with gougères, smoked trout rillettes, fried chicken, or a plate of young goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Dry and all Chardonnay. A fine, elegant nose and a supple and generous mid-palate, and bright acidity with a chalky mineral edge that gives the fresh finish its structure. Medium-bodied, crisp, clean.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
