From a family that has grown grapes in the Northern Rhône since 1575—nearly 450 years of accumulated wisdom. The Lionnets farm just under one hectare of Saint-Joseph organically, producing what critics call "a profound Northern Rhône thoroughbred...bottled in infinitesimal quantities." Whole-cluster fermentation, 18 months in demi-muids, no fining or filtration. If you can find it, this 94-point Syrah is as pure and authentic as Northern Rhône gets. 450-year family legacy (since 1575). Organic, whole-cluster, no fining/filtration. "Infinitesimal quantities" of profound Syrah. 94 pts. Pure Northern Rhône.

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2022 Saint Joseph Terre Neuve is derived from vines planted in the commune of Châteaubourg on clay and limestone soils. Revealing a slightly reduced, elegant bouquet of mulberries, dark berries, flowers and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and enrobing with good depth at the core, velvety tannins and a seamless, delicate texture that leads to a delicate, ethereal finish enhanced by lovely peppery notes due to clay soils. Macerated for 20 days and fermented with 100% whole bunches, it was matured for 13 months in used large barrels. This is a stunning wine." —Yohan Castaing

More about Lionnet

Corinne Lionnet and Ludovic Izerable tend 2.2 hectares of steep Cornas vineyards where some vines are over a century old. The family has been growing grapes on these slopes since 1575. Organically farmed, aged in large oak, no new wood—their Syrah is a study in what patience and respect for terroir can yield.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

Ludovic and Corinne own just shy of a hectare of Saint-Joseph, in the village of Châteaubourg—the southernmost village in the appellation, just north of Cornas. Half of their holding is a younger parcel, and the other half was planted in the 1950s, both on clay-limestone soils with a high occurrence of large limestone galets. As with their Cornas, they vinify the Saint-Joseph without de-stemming, and age it for 18 months in used 600-liter demi-muids before bottling without fining or filtration. This is Saint-Joseph with a Cornas sensibility: embracing of its spiciness, firmly structured, and rivetingly mineral-driven.
