A rose with a passport. Living Roots splits its year between the Finger Lakes and South Australia, and this pale, dry pink comes from cool-climate New York Cabernet Franc given just a couple of hours on the skins. That short kiss of maceration draws out color and a whisper of fine tannin, so this drinks more like a serious, food-friendly Provence-style rose than a fruity poolside sipper. Fresh strawberry, high-toned acidity, and a cool-climate snap of spice. Rose you can actually think about, from one of New York's most inventive producers.

More about Living Roots

Living Roots makes wine in two hemispheres: Seb and Colleen Hardy split each year between New York's Finger Lakes and South Australia's Adelaide Hills, so they get two harvests a year.

Seb is a sixth-generation winemaker. His ancestor Thomas Hardy, who founded the Hardy's wine business, planted vines in South Australia in 1853. Colleen is from Rochester, New York. They met during the 2014 harvest at Hardy's in McLaren Vale and started Living Roots in 2016, opening an urban winery in Rochester in 2017. A cellar door at the family's K1 vineyard in the Adelaide Hills followed in 2021, then a winery on Shale Creek Vineyard above Keuka Lake in 2023, a property that belongs to Colleen's family.

Each side of the business plays to its region: whites and sparkling from the cool Finger Lakes, brighter reds from South Australia. Seb trained at the University of Adelaide and worked vintages in Australia, France, Italy, Austria and the US. He aims for minimal inputs and maximum quality.

Our New York shelf shows the house sense of humor: bone-dry Riesling, a textured Pinot Gris, a pale dry rosé, and Red Rizza, which is Riesling juice fermented on Cabernet Franc skins.
