Cantine Lonardo is one of Taurasi’s most quietly revered producers, working with old, ungrafted vines on volcanic soils in the heart of Irpinia. The 2017 vintage—warm, but handled with restraint—brings out the darker, more brooding side of Aglianico: black cherry, licorice, iron, and ash, all wrapped in dense but finely shaped tannins.

Fermentation with native yeasts and aging in large, neutral oak let the site and variety lead. There’s no modern gloss here—just structure, savory depth, and a firm, mineral backbone. The wine opens slowly, and benefits from air or time in the cellar, where it will continue to evolve for 10–20 years.

Pair with braised meats, aged cheeses, or hearty, spice-driven dishes. For fans of Barolo, Brunello, or other serious reds that reward patience and a good decanter, Lonardo’s Taurasi is a true under-the-radar gem.

Cantine Lonardo is one of those domaines that have been growing grapes—always organically—for generations, but only started bottling in recent times (1998). They continue to work organically and use traditional practices in the winery. To lovers of traditional Barolo, this will sound familiar: a very long maceration (beyond two months!), aging strictly in large neutral barrels, and wines of depth, power, structure, and soulfulness. The grapes are picked late and yet the alcohols are modest, resulting in wonderfully balanced wines.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Taurasi is wild, with a seductively earthy bouquet. Cedar shavings and exotic spice complement citrus-tinged blackberries and minty herbs. It's surprisingly fresh yet potent, with an intense core of balsamic-tinged black fruits carried across a velvety textural wave. The 2017 tapers off with a mentholated freshness, leaving a pleasantly bitter sensation and a caking of fine tannins that tug at the cheeks. This is a classic Taurasi at its best. Of note, the grapes that would usually be used to create the single-vineyard Coste were added to the Taurasi due to the extremely low yields in 2017." -Vinous

"Another back vintage, the Contrade di Taurasi 2017 Taurasi Lonardo shows ripe, raisiny fruit and lots of sweet oak spice. The wine is heavy and loaded up front with the black and jammy flavors you expect from a scorching hot vintage such as this. It ends with thick textural fiber and chalky tannins."
