Lorenzo Accomasso was the legendary hermit of La Morra, a tiny-production traditionalist who farmed his Rocche dell'Annunziata parcels in the manner of Bartolo Mascarello: fifty-plus-day macerations in concrete, five-plus years in 50-hectoliter Slavonian botti, no fining, no filtration, almost nothing added. Lorenzo passed in August 2025 at 91, having spent his final decades working alongside his sister Elena (and after her death in 2016, largely alone). These late-career Riservas are essentially unrepeatable. The 2011 is from a warm, generous vintage that gave Lorenzo's wine an unusually plush surface over its bedrock of classical structure — a Riserva that's drinking beautifully right now while showing the patience of his long aging.

"The ultimate Langa underdog, Lorenzo Accomasso, owns some of the most beautiful parcels in La Morra. His 2011 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva Vigna Rocchette is a wine of rare Nebbiolo pedigree, with vines that have benefitted from decades of Accomasso's careful and loving farming touch. Unfortunately, his wines are not always even in execution, and although I have asked to see his winery, no one is allowed inside. What mysteries befall these wines once the grapes come off those beautiful vines is anyone's guess. This vintage shows 15% alcohol registered on the label, and you feel it all. That heat is followed by ripe aromas of wild cherry and fragrant rose. The wine's texture is loosely knit, showing the characteristics of Nebbiolo from a warm vintage. The jury is out on how much longer this wine will age, although ten years sounds like a safe bet." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato, agnolotti del plin with butter and sage, vitello tonnato, or anything coaxed slowly out of a copper pot. A wheel of aged Bra Duro at the end never hurt anyone.

Tasting Profile

Plush, perfumed, and gently mature, with dried roses, dried cherry, leather, sweet tobacco, and a whisper of truffle. Warm-vintage flesh draped over classical bone structure. Drinking beautifully now.
