If Morgon ever ranked its vineyards, Javernières would be a grand cru. This bottle comes from vines right at its edge, on deep clay that sits just outside the appellation line, which is why the label says plain "Beaujolais." That technicality works in your favor: you get Desvignes farming and Desvignes winemaking from a celebrated corner of Morgon under a humbler name. Siblings Claude-Emmanuelle and Louis-Benoît Desvignes, the eighth generation of the family on this land, first made L'Aube à Javernières in 2020. It was the first Desvignes wine not drawn strictly from inside Morgon's boundaries. The fruit comes from a single 0.84-hectare parcel of 20- to 30-year-old certified-organic vines, picked by hand and partly destemmed. It ferments in closed concrete vats, partly by carbonic maceration, with the cap held under for about ten days and no punchdowns, then ages seven months in concrete before a light filtration. It's an easy way into one of Beaujolais' most serious houses: something to open on a weeknight while the Morgons rest in the cellar.

More about Louis-Claude Desvignes

Louis-Claude Desvignes embodied Beaujolais' spirit: picking later than his neighbors, working with semi-carbonic fermentation, making wines that age like Pinot Noir. His children now run the eighth-generation domaine, continuing his legacy with organic farming and the same proven methods.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

100% Gamay. 2020 was the first vintage of this bottling and the first Desvignes wine to not be strictly from within the boundaries of Morgon. This 0.84-hectare parcel of 20-30-year-old, now-certified-organic vines consists of deep clay soils at the edge of Javernières. The bunches are harvested by hand and partially destemmed. They are gently pressed and go into closed concrete vats for a partly carbonic fermentation; maceration is about 10 days with a submerged cap and no punchdowns. A very small amount of sulfur is added after malo and sometimes at bottling. The wine is aged in concrete vat for 7 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lyonnaise saucisson and pork rillettes with cornichons; roast chicken with herbed potatoes; salade lyonnaise with lardons and a poached egg; grilled Toulouse sausages with lentils.

Tasting Profile

Expect a Beaujolais with more depth than most: dark cherry and red plum, a touch of violet and earthy spice, on a medium-bodied frame with fresh acidity and soft, fine tannins. Concrete ageing keeps the fruit pure and unoaked, and the finish is juicy and dry; think a younger, more approachable cousin of Morgon.
