Chambertin is one of Burgundy's greatest Grand Crus, the muscular, deep-toned king of Gevrey, and Louis Jadot is among its most reliable interpreters. This 1996 is a true mature back-vintage from a structured, classic year, now three decades along and into its secondary glory. Expect aromas of dried cherry, forest floor, mushroom, and sweet spice, with the silky, resolved texture that only time gives Pinot Noir. A bottle for those who love old red Burgundy at its evolved, savory best; condition will vary, as it does with wines of this age.

"The nose is presently a mix of secondary fruit and earth, game and spice hints, all of which are reflected by the delicious and velvety medium-bodied flavors that retain a good sense of delineation and energy, all wrapped in a complex and reasonably well-balanced finish. I say reasonably well-balanced as there is just a touch of '96-like acidity. For my taste, this has just arrived at the front edge of its peak drinkability though it should hold here for many years though I suspect that the acid spine will eventually start to dry out the finish."

"Given Jadot's track record with Chambertin (the 1990, tasted recently, is stupendous), I found this wine to be tight and reserved. Dark ruby-colored and offering a delightful nose of roses, perfume, and chocolate-covered cherries, it is a silky-textured, rich, lively, and wonderfully dense wine jam-packed with deeply ripe red and black fruits as well as hints of underbrush. What I tasted was certainly an outstanding wine, and my instincts and experience suggest there is more to it."

More about Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859, Jadot is one of Burgundy's great estates and négociants, with 600 acres scattered across the region's best vineyards—Chablis to Moulin-à-Vent. They make hundreds of wines, but each bottle carries the iconic Bacchus emblem and the weight of nearly two centuries of accumulated wisdom. Burgundy without the pretension.
