If Clos de la Roche is the Beethoven of Morey-Saint-Denis - powerful, serious, and commanding - then Clos Saint-Denis is its Mozart: delicate, nuanced, and finely tuned. The village itself takes its name from this vineyard, established by monks of the collegiate church of Saint-Denis de Vergy in the eleventh century. At roughly six and a half hectares, it is significantly smaller than neighboring Clos de la Roche, and the terroir differs meaningfully: pebble-free brown limestone soil with higher clay content that retains more water, producing wines of greater aromatic complexity and perfume over sheer power. Jadot brings the same Grand Cru expertise here as it does across its remarkable Côte de Nuits portfolio, fermenting in vat for up to four weeks before eighteen to twenty months in barrel. At twenty-four years old this is a fully mature bottle: the fruit has turned savory, the tannins have resolved, and what is left is the perfume this vineyard exists for. Decant gently off the sediment and drink it now over an unhurried meal - if well stored, there is nothing to be gained by waiting.
