Clos Saint-Jacques is the vineyard Burgundy people point to when they argue the 1936 classification got something wrong: a 6.7-hectare amphitheater in Gevrey-Chambertin that nearly everyone agrees performs at Grand Cru level. Only five growers own a piece of it, each holding a strip that runs the full height of the slope, and Louis Jadot's roughly one hectare came with its 1985 purchase of part of Domaine Clair-Dau. The site faces east-southeast between 290 and 340 meters on a steep grade, over Bathonian limestone with only a thin layer of stony loam on top, the same geology as the Grand Crus a few hundred meters away. 2013 was a hard-won vintage of cold wet spring, a July hailstorm and the latest widespread harvest since 1978, with Pinot Noir not picked until October, and it produced light, high-acid, transparent reds rather than powerful ones. Gevrey was among the vintage's clearest successes, and in a wine like this the fruit is delicate while the site's structure does the talking. This bottle comes from a private cellar and is drinking now.

"Here there is a bit more wood with the associated traces of menthol that surround the elegant floral and like the Estournelles, airy essence of red berry fruit liqueur and spice suffused aromas. There is a sophisticated mouth feel to the appealingly textured, intense and focused middle weight flavors that also display plenty of minerality that serves to add lift to the structured, serious and strikingly long finish. This is indisputably terrific though interestingly it doesn't seem to have quite as much separation between it and the other Gevrey 1ers in the range as I typically find chez Jadot. Still, this should be a really lovely effort though note well that this is a CSJ for the patient."

"Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has a composed bouquet with dark cherry, red plum, a light estuarine influence seeping through with aeration, all with good intensity and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, plenty of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, tensile with a brisk and quite punchy finish. I thought it might be Bruno Clair's Clos Saint Jacques before its identity was revealed - a classy number from the Jadot team. Tasted September 2016." —Neal Martin
