Griotte-Chambertin is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's smallest Grand Crus, occupying a distinctive shell-shaped limestone depression with exceptionally thin topsoil. The name derives from "griotte"—the morello cherry—and the wine lives up to it, delivering cherry-scented aromatics with an elegance that stands apart from Gevrey's typically muscular character. Where neighboring Chambertin and Clos de Bèze overwhelm with power, Griotte seduces with finesse, mineral complexity, and aromatic purity. Jadot's parcel benefits from the cru's lean, stony limestone soils, which encourage early ripening and produce wines of remarkable balance. The 2005 vintage adds another dimension: thick skins from a warm, dry growing season delivered intense color and ripe, fine-grained tannins alongside bright acidity. This is Grand Cru Burgundy at its most perfumed and lifting—dark cherry, licorice, and truffle over a pure mineral core. Still developing and will reward patience.

"A slightly less elegant but equally complex nose of almost exclusively red berry fruit aromas nuanced by touches of earth, underbrush and a subtle hint of game precede round, rich and generous flavors underpinned by suave tannins and a velvety and dusty finish. At present the tannins are on the chewy side and like the Latricières, this will require a certain amount of patience."

"The 2005 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru from Maison Louis Jadot is a cuvée no longer produced since the fermage expired. It offers dark plummy fruit mixed with pain d’épices on the youthful nose, though it does not quite deliver the nuance of Griotte’s finest exponents. The palate has structure and grip, layered with dark berry fruit laced with tar, dark chocolate and graphite. It coheres nicely towards the finish and delivers the precision that I wish the nose expressed. Still, a decent showing for a 20-year-old wine." -Neal Martin

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
