Maranges is the last village of the Cote de Beaune before the vineyards run out, sitting on the same limestone and marl that continues straight across the boundary from southern Santenay, and it remains one of the last village-level appellations in the Cote d'Or that a normal person can still buy without flinching. Brothers Claude and Herve Muzard have farmed here and in Santenay since taking over from their father in 1995, dropping herbicides, converting to organics in 2005 and earning biodynamic certification in 2011; the wines are made with native yeasts in wooden tanks and bottled without fining or filtration. Their 2024 comes from parcels around Dezize and Sampigny. It was a brutally difficult growing season across Burgundy, wet and mildew-ridden, and yields were tiny, but the reds that survived are the essence of cool-climate Pinot Noir: perfumed, modest in alcohol, and beautifully sappy. Drink this over the next five or six years.

More about Lucien Muzard et Fils

The Muzard family makes big picture decisions, like practicing organic farming and harvesting by hand, require more work but they (and we!) believe they make for better wines. But it's their micro-choices that we suspect ultimately set them apart. For instance, they debud the vines that face the morning sun differently than the ones that face the afternoon sun, to ensure the best possible airflow and healthiest ripening.

This sort of attention to detail is hard and, if you aren't making Le Montrachet or some other super-famous wine, may not ever be fully compensated. The Muzards do it nevertheless and the result is a really superior Burgundy at a totally reasonable cost.

Sourced from two vineyards near Cheilly-les-Maranges, planted in the 1960s.

Orientation

Southeast.

Soil

Heavy clay soils. The Muzard brothers refer to this soil as "sol amoureux" or loving soil as the clay sticks to your boots. You can always tell when one has been working in the Maranges vines!

Viticulture

leaf pulling, soils are worked, all fruit is hand-harvested.

Vinification

Fermentation in tank with about 40% whole clusters.

Aging

Aged 10 months, 30% in tank and 70% in 228-liter and 350-liter barrels, about 15% of which are new.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, coq au vin, mushroom risotto, or a charcuterie board. Also good with grilled salmon or a plate of soft washed-rind cheese.

Tasting Profile

Fresh red cherry, crushed strawberry and violets with a touch of earth and spice. Light- to medium-bodied, bright acidity, fine supple tannins, and a sappy, energetic finish.
