The Muzards' oldest Pinot Noir vines in Santenay, and the wine that has been quietly pushing the village toward Burgundy's upper echelons. Old vines on Santenay's clay and limestone give depth and concentration that the appellation's reputation still hasn't caught up with, and the family's patient, terroir-driven approach does the rest: Claude and Herve Muzard farm organically since 2005 and biodynamically certified since 2011, ferment with native yeasts in wooden tanks, and bottle unfined and unfiltered. The 2024 season was one of Burgundy's hardest in memory, wet and mildew-plagued, with tiny yields, but it delivered reds of cool, floral, crushed-berry Pinot character at gentle alcohol levels. One Muzard tip worth knowing: their wines can hold a little CO2 after bottling, so if a young bottle seems shy or reduced, decant it and watch it bloom. Drink over the next six to eight years.

More about Lucien Muzard et Fils

The Muzard family makes big picture decisions, like practicing organic farming and harvesting by hand, require more work but they (and we!) believe they make for better wines. But it's their micro-choices that we suspect ultimately set them apart. For instance, they debud the vines that face the morning sun differently than the ones that face the afternoon sun, to ensure the best possible airflow and healthiest ripening.

This sort of attention to detail is hard and, if you aren't making Le Montrachet or some other super-famous wine, may not ever be fully compensated. The Muzards do it nevertheless and the result is a really superior Burgundy at a totally reasonable cost.

Soil

Clay-limestone

Viticulture

Organically farmed, soils are worked, all fruit is hand-harvested.

Vinification

Fermented in wooden vats, with 40% whole clusters. No punch downs, only gentle pump overs to avoid aggressive tannins.

Aging

Aged 10 months, 30% in tank and 70% in 228-liter and 350-liter barrels, 15% of which are new.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast, beef bourguignon, mushroom and thyme tart, or roast pork with root vegetables. Also lovely with softer washed-rind cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Red cherry, crushed raspberry and rose petal with dried herbs and a mineral, earthy base. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and firm but fine tannins, finishing long and savory.
