Cottà is the oldest piece of land the Voghera family owns, and the Barbaresco that comes off it is the estate's home wine in the truest sense — two parcels totalling three hectares on the Neive side of the zone, one planted 30 years ago and the other with vines up to 60 years old. The site is hilly and southwest-facing on calcareous marl and sand, picked in the first week of October, and the cellar work is resolutely old-school: fermentation and a roughly two-week maceration in steel, then a minimum two years in large Allier casks rather than small barrels, so the fruit and the site do the talking instead of the wood. Livio Voghera runs things now, holding to the methods his father Luigi set in 1974 when he turned the family's Neive farm over entirely to vines and started bottling his own wine. Everything is estate bottled from 22 hectares, with around 1,400 cases of the Cottà made in a year. For traditional, single-cru Barbaresco with real old-vine depth, this remains one of the more honest values in the Langhe.

More about Luigi Voghera

If you like your Barbaresco made the old way, with traditional macerations, big oak casks and no makeup, Luigi Voghera is a name to know: a family farm in Neive that has been doing things the same way for decades.

The Vogheras have farmed in Neive, one of Barbaresco's core villages, for as long as anyone remembers. For most of that time they made a little wine for the family while also growing grain and fruit trees. Luigi turned the farm over entirely to grapes in 1974. His son Livio runs it now, still using his father's methods, and everything is estate-bottled.

Two crus anchor the Barbaresco. Cottà, the family's oldest holding, is about three hectares in two parcels facing southwest at 230 to 250 meters, with some vines up to around 60 years old. It's a historic Neive site on bluish Tortonian marl, named among the area's top vineyards by Luigi Veronelli back in 1969. Basarin is a smaller, fully south-facing plot of under a hectare. The Nebbiolo ferments and macerates for 10 to 15 days in stainless steel, then ages about two years in large oak casks.

The range continues with Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo: honest, traditional reds from the same hands.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Skurnik Wines has to say about this wine:

Nebbiolo sourced entirely from two parcels (a total of three hectares) in the Cottà vineyard, the oldest property under the Voghera family’s ownership

The vines of one parcel are 30-years-old and the second parcel up to 60-years-old

230-250 meters above sea level

Southwest exposure

Fermentation-maceration occurs in stainless steel for 10 to 15 days, and then the wine is then racked into 30HL and 50HL casks for two years of aging

1,400 cases produced annually

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, braised beef short ribs, tajarin with butter and sage, roast guinea hen or duck, wild boar ragù, mushroom risotto, and aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano. Serve at cellar-to-warm temperature, around 18°C.

Tasting Profile

Ruby red fading to orange at the rim. Aromas of violet, dried cherry, forest floor and baking spice. Medium-bodied and dry, with bright acidity and firm, gripping tannins that stay fine rather than heavy. The finish is long, savory and a little earthy. A decant or an hour in the glass helps it open.
