The vineyard is Tantéi, and the only 100-year-old parcel of Timorasso in the world. Without it, we would probably have no Timorasso today. The few plots that survived phylloxera and the world wars were ripped out in the 1950s due to the grape's enormous labor and financial inputs—money that just wasn't available to poor farmers in a bulk wine region. But Tantéi was a rare plot farmed for personal consumption of the owner's family, and whose financial output was not a factor in keeping it; the quality was. Enrico Mandirola's father bought it decades ago, and Walter Massa took cuttings to replant his own initial vineyards. 100 years of history in a bottle!
This wine demands time and patience. If you can put it away for another 3 years, do. If you must drink it now (we did and it was incredible), then it needs a long decant to shine. It has more of everything—spicy yellow fruit, sharp steely acidity, powdery phenolics, toasted hazelnuts, acacia barrel, sarsaparilla, mushrooms, potted earth—probably due to the age of the vines and the wild diverse DNA throughout the vineyard.
It starts out intense and powerful, but on day three it was just insane. Notes of fennel, white chocolate, chamomile, salt, cheese rind, iodine, flint were all present. The amount of life in this wine is unbelievable; it's almost mystical.
