Aux Etelois is a village lieu-dit wedged between two Grand Crus - Charmes-Chambertin on one side, Griotte-Chambertin on the other - which is why Marchand-Tawse bottles it separately instead of folding it into the village blend. The parcel belongs to the Tawse family and is farmed biodynamically; in 2023 the fruit was completely destemmed and the wine finished at 13.5%, a touch riper than the house's other Gevrey cuvées. Pascal Marchand came to Burgundy from Quebec, made his reputation resurrecting Comte Armand's Clos des Épeneaux, converted Domaine de la Vougeraie to biodynamics, and has run this house with Moray Tawse since 2011. What you get is classic Gevrey: dark berry fruit, white pepper and sous-bois on a medium-bodied frame. It should be at its best from around 2027 into the mid-2030s, though a good decant opens it up now.

Antonio Galloni

91-93 points

"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Etelois is completely destemmed, with slightly higher alcohol and ripeness than other cuvées from this appellation (13.5%). The aromatics are well defined and focused with dark berry fruit, touches of white pepper, sous-bois and fine complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive structure and depth. It has just a touch of black pepper and balsamic, which are very harmonious with real substance on the finish. This is an excellent Etelois from Marchand-Tawse." —Neal Martin
