The Margherita Otto project belongs to Alan Manley, an American who relocated to Piedmont, spent years working alongside Maria Teresa Mascarello in the cellar of Bartolo Mascarello, and in 2015 launched his own tiny estate. Like Mascarello, he makes a single Barolo blended in continuous fermentation across vineyards in Monforte (near Ginestra), Castiglione Falletto (Pernanno), and additional plots added in 2018 — a classic assemblaggio Barolo at a moment when most producers are bottling single crus. The 2017 vintage was warm and dry, and the wine carries that vintage's generous, open-knit character — ripe but balanced, layered, and showing all the patient, perfumed lift you'd expect from a cellar shaped by Mascarello.

"The 2017 Barolo is a very pretty wine. Perfumed aromatics, distinctly red-toned fruit and mid-weight structure are the signatures. Readers will find a gracious, perfumed Barolo that is more finesse than power. There is plenty of tannin, so a few years in the cellar are warranted. Moreover, the 2017 does not show some of the small flaws of the 2016, although it is naturally the product of a less favorable growing season. This is a terrific showing." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The Margherita Otto 2017 Barolo reveals an elegant, medium-weight approach with a generous bouquet of dark cherry, plum, blue flower and licorice root. I love the intensity of the bouquet that hints at the vintage heat and dryness but also leaves ample room for the Nebbiolo grape to express itself in an uninterrupted and transparent manner. The mouthfeel is lean, and the tannins are young, so count on a few more years of cellar aging for this release of 4,600 bottles." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Mushroom risotto, agnolotti del plin with butter and sage, herb-roasted pork loin with roasted root vegetables, or a board of aged Piedmontese cheeses like Bra Duro and Toma. Truffles, in any form, are always welcome at this table.

Tasting Profile

Open, generous, and aromatic, with ripe red cherry, dried rose, sweet tobacco, dried orange peel, and a warm undertone of leather and spice. Layered and approachable, with classical fine-grained tannin and excellent length.
