A Barolo of the old assemblaggio school from a young estate already attracting cult attention. Margherita Otto was founded in 2015 by Alan Manley, an American who moved to the Langhe in 2011 and has worked at several historic Langhe estates including Bartolo Mascarello (alongside Maria Teresa Mascarello), Elio Altare, Cavallotto, and Sandrone. Following his mentor's tradition, Manley co-ferments fruit from several distinct sites into one unified Barolo: holdings adjacent to Ginestra (Monforte), Pernanno (Castiglione Falletto), Vignane and Coste di Rose (Barolo), and the edge of Vigna Rionda (Serralunga). Fruit arrives as each parcel ripens and is added to the running ferment in concrete; the wine then spends 32-34 months in traditional botti. The 2018 is a balanced, mid-weight vintage drinking beautifully now with another decade of potential.

"The 2018 Barolo from Margherita Otto is a pretty wine, but it also comes across as lacking in freshness, as is evidenced by its forward profile and slightly advanced color. Dried cherry, tobacco, spice, cedar and tobacco open gently with a bit aeration. It will be interesting to see if the 2018 gains a bit more mid-palate depth in bottle." —Antonio Galloni
