Marie-Pierre Chevassu-Fassenet farms just 4.5 hectares near Château-Chalon and hoes every row by hand with one part-time helper. Her Côtes du Jura Pinot Noir is about as direct a look at small-grower Jura as you'll find. Her reds follow the modern Jura approach: fully destemmed, whole berries fermented in stainless steel, no oak at all, and released 8-10 months after harvest. That shift has been the biggest change at the domaine since her father handed it to her in 2008. Before coming home she trained in Beaune and Dijon, made wine in New Zealand, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Champagne, then ran the cellar at one of the Jura's largest négociants. Home is Les Granges-Bernard, an old farm surrounded by pasture and old forest on the plateau behind Menétru-le-Vignoble. Her parents still live above the cellar, and her father once raised cattle there for cheese. The farming is organic, though she's never bothered with certification. On more than half her vines she has swapped copper and sulfur for fermented plant preparations, which is a lot of extra work for a bottle made with this little fuss.

"The 2025 Pinot Noir was the only red available, as the Poulsard and the Trousseau were already sold out, since volumes are really small. In 2025, yields were 20 hectoliters per hectare, still quite low. So, the grapes were ripe, but the alcohol was still between 12% and 12.5%. She hand-destemmed her Pinot Noir and used a little sulfur on the grapes. This is quite fruit-driven, a little raw and rustic, quite straightforward, with notes of fresh fruit and just a spicy twist. It's very young, of course, and juicy, and it has fine tannins." —Luis Gutiérrez

Perfect Pairings

Comté and Morbier on a cheese board; saucisse de Morteau with warm lentils; roast chicken with a mushroom pan sauce; a wild mushroom tart; pâté en croûte and other cold charcuterie.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright, lighter-bodied Jura take on Pinot Noir: red cherry, raspberry and a touch of earth and forest floor, with no oak to get in the way of the fruit. Whole-berry fermentation in steel typically keeps it fresh, with crisp acidity, fine, gentle tannins and a clean, dry finish. Think a crunchier, more rustic red Burgundy.
