Mosel Riesling with bubbles, from a grower far better known for the still wines that made his name. Markus Molitor has been making sparkling wine since the early 1980s, well ahead of Germany's Sekt revival, and he treats it seriously: 100% Riesling off slate soils along the river, fermented first in large wooden casks and then given its second fermentation in tank before being finished Brut. On his still bottles the capsule colour tells you the sweetness, white for dry, green for off-dry and gold for sweet, and this lands squarely in the dry camp, with only enough dosage to round the edges. Molitor took over the family estate in 1984 at twenty and expanded it to around a hundred hectares of the steepest Mosel and Saar slopes, so the fruit here has a serious address behind it. Serve it very cold as an aperitif, or with anything fried.

88 points

"Well-knit, with a fine mousse and notes of almond, pepper and persimmon. On the lighter side, but shows refinement and balance."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters, fried chicken, salt-and-vinegar potato chips, tempura vegetables, or a wedge of young Gruyere before dinner.

Tasting Profile

Ripe pear, red apple, grapefruit and white peach on the nose, with a stony, faintly bready note underneath. Dry and light-bodied, with brisk acidity and a fine, persistent bead. Clean, crisp finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
