The list of high-quality producers of traditional white Rioja is so short that whenever we come across one, we get excited. Marques de Tomares is one of the great historic estates of Rioja, founded in the late 1800s alongside legends like Lopez de Heredia and La Rioja Alta, and still run by the founding family, from vines Grandpa planted over a century ago. For years the winery sold only to elite Spanish society clubs and top restaurants rather than to the public, which is why so few people know the name. This is the white that makes the case: a barrel-aged crianza in the old style, built on the Viura grape, where oak and time give a mature-tasting wine real texture and depth. Traditional white Rioja is a rare treasure, and this is a delicious way in.
