The d'Angerville family calls Clos des Ducs its "grand vin": a walled Volnay 1er Cru monopole that already belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy in the early 16th century, and is still exactly the 52 ouvrées (2.15 hectares) measured back then. An ouvrée was the patch one vigneron could work alone in a day, so this is a vineyard measured in human labour. The vines grow on a steep slope facing south-east, in poor, stony, strongly calcareous white marl that drains fast. The family has owned it since 1804. Sem, Marquis d'Angerville, replanted the whole domaine after phylloxera, and after he stood up to the négociants' blending, the domaine began bottling its own wine in the 1920s. Today Guillaume d'Angerville and his daughter Margot run the domaine, which has been certified biodynamic since 2009. The family's own view is that Clos des Ducs is a slow-moving wine for the cellar that shows its best at about ten years, so a 2015 is just reaching the age it was made for.

"There is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background for today. The graceful yet precise flavors brim with both underlying tension and minerality and possess that beguiling quality of inner mouth perfume before delivering the best length in the range on the youthfully austere finale. This is very clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it; indeed I doubt that this will arrive at its peak much before it sees its 20th birthday. I would further observe that while this may not be the finest Ducster of the modern era, it should ultimately give both the 1999 and 2005 a run for their money, which indisputably puts it in elite company."

"Saturated dark red-ruby. Deep, powerful aromas of kirsch, menthol, licorice and dark chocolate, along with a faint musky nuance. Wonderfully rich and enveloping wine, with its distinctly dark fruit flavors accented by pepper and spices. At once dense and energetic owing to its sappy minerality and surprising back-end acidity, this wine is nonetheless a bit of a bruiser, as its fully ripe but serious mouth-clenching tannins are going to need time to resolve. But the wine's impressive salty, mineral-driven persistence suggests that it will be long-lived. (13.5% alcohol; September 6 harvest; 35 h/h produced; 3.36 pH; d'Angerville attributed the unusually dark color of this wine to drought conditions in Volnay from mid-June to early August)" —Stephen Tanzer

"The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs from Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is a lovely rendition of this great wine, offering up a lovely bouquet of rose petal, red cherry, orange rind and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a deep core of concentrated and crunchy fruit, bright acids, and a long, tangy finish of wonderful purity. This is a great Clos des Ducs in the making." —William Kelley

"Monopole. Tasted not long before bottling. Mid dark crimson. Comfortable bitter-cherry fruit and lovely fluidity and freshness. Soars above the rest. With a dry chalky finish. Very majestic. Noble and glorious. Long."

"Black cherry, iron and spice flavors get support from a serious backbone of acidity and tannins. Starts out silky and ends firm, needing time to integrate. Stays fresh throughout. Best from 2023 through 2040."

More about Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or pigeon with a jus; duck breast with a cherry sauce; coq au vin; wild mushroom and thyme tart; veal chop with morels; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Volnay profile with extra backbone: red cherry, raspberry and violet, plus a savoury, earthy edge that deepens with age. Typically medium-bodied and silky but firmer than most Volnay, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a long, stony finish. It's a slow-developing red built for the cellar.
