Evan Martin calls this the Meursault of his lineup, and the comparison fits. Martin Woods, tucked into the oak-forested coast-range foothills near McMinnville, draws Mozaik from two Willamette Valley sites with chalky, saline soils, blending them into the winery's roundest, richest white. It comes off softer and riper than his other Chardonnays, all sweet citrus and a classical, understated, almost marine finish. Built in the artisan, terroir-driven mold that has made this small Oregon winery a sommelier favorite, it splits the difference between New World generosity and Old World restraint. Serve it not too cold and give it air.

"The 2023 Chardonnay Mozaik bursts from the glass with savory herbs, crushed rocks, menthol and lime-laced green apples. It is seamlessly silken in feel, with opulently ripe orchard fruit and nearly glycerol concentration offset by a saline resonance throughout. Spicy notes emerge on the finish, which is incredibly long and full of zesty tension, nearly crunchy in texture. Expertly balanced. This wine is a mix of the Yamhill Valley and Pearlstad Vineyards." —Eric Guido

"The 2023 Mōzāik Chardonay is a new wine composed of fruit from the Yamhill Valley and Pearlstad Vineyards, based on volcanic and marine soils, respectively—unusual, as most of the wines in the Martin Woods portfolio are single-vineyard cuvées. Winemaker Evan Martin says the Mōzāik is not a prestige cuvée but rather they are "blending for a theme. With Oregon Chardonnay, how broad or tense can we go? The magic is some combination of that.” Matured for 18 months in around 5% to 10% new oak, it has aromas of poached pears, apricot, spring honey, chalk and hazelnuts. The medium-bodied palate offers a dynamic interplay of richness and tension, and it has a long, saline-laced finish." —Erin Brooks

More about Martin Woods

Evan Martin takes terroir to its logical extreme: he doesn't just pour the forest floor into your glass, he built his winery using fallen oak from his own property. That means the slate and minerals in the wine aren't just reflected in the fruit—they're literally in the wood, too. His Willamette Pinots and Chardonnays push what cool-climate Oregon can do with a sommelier's precision and a wild streak.
