Saint-Joseph was a victim of its own success, expanding 15-fold from roughly 100 hectares to the 1,500 hectares you find today, diluting its reputation. Northern Rhone hunters know many of those original plots continue offer some of the valley's best value.

Matthieu's bottling is from one such hidden gem. He harvest's one hectare of grapes from one of the most wildly beautiful, polycultural-biosphere vineyards, organically farmed by his friend Jean Delobre of Ferme des Sept Lunes. Two plots sit along along the road D 86, and sits at the highest edge of the appellation's elevation, for a Syrah very unlike their brooding Cornas cousins. Here the grapes project Syrah's aromatic essence directly into your glass—sanguine cherry and brisk acidity wrapping around deep-set tannins, all at an elegant 13% alcohol.
