A Kabinett off a third of a hectare of old ungrafted vines, in a site almost nobody outside the Mosel can name. Treppchen "vorm Berg" is a two-hectare patch tucked just behind the Kilburg estate, up a side valley above and behind the great Ohligsberg — higher, cooler, and darker and denser in fruit than its famous neighbor, with powerful acidity and a savory, herbal streak. Ungrafted vines in a barely-known vineyard, farmed by one of the Mosel's brightest young growers, are the kind of thing that gets found out eventually. Max is the 20th generation of his family on the river, farming the Geierslay estate in Wintrich plus a micro-project of old-vine parcels that totals about 1.2 hectares, and this Kabinett was a recent addition to his lineup. His Kabinetts have a reputation for being firm, precise and racy rather than soft — this is the gently sweet Mosel style wound tight. Buy it before the site has a reputation to pay for.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Crispy pork belly with apple, Thai green curry, smoked trout with horseradish cream, schnitzel and lemon, or a plate of Alsatian choucroute garnie. Also very good with spicy Sichuan cold noodles.

Tasting Profile

Gently sweet but tightly wound, with darker orchard and stone fruit rather than bright citrus, plus a savory herbal edge and wet-slate minerality. Firm, driving acidity keeps the sweetness in check. Long, clean, salty finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
